This got deleted on a thread about Osteen’s response to Hurricane Harvey on Facebook, so I decided to post it here.
I’m thinking most people’s outrage is coming from observations of seeming hypocrisy. NFL player JJ Watt has raised over 8.5 million for relief in the area (with no overt religious affiliation). [Source below] His response was immediate from initial reports of damage in the area.
Osteen preaches prosperity gospel, and is all about favor and has millions of dollars in personal wealth. (Which is fine, cool - I have other issues with that.) However, his delay in response to Harvey and seemingly empty well wishes seem hypocritical to a lot of people. His original claim is that his church was flooded - which was reportedly disproven, [Source below] and then went on the Today Show and said the real reason he didn’t open up his church for shelter in a more timely manner was because the city never asked him to. [Source below] Now, would this time of need be a great opportunity to tell people of your message? Instead of waiting for the government to request assistance from you? Smells fishy to a lot of people.
He preaches $$$, put your $$$ where your mouth is when your community needs it the most. But what do I know? I’m just a liberal in NYC!
